Carolina RailHawks midfielder Daniel Paladini and defender Kupono Low were named to the USL First Division Team of the Week for Week 8, the USL announced Tuesday.
This is the second straight week both players have been honored.
Paladini scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute of Friday’s 1-0 win over the Cleveland City Stars at WakeMed Soccer Park. As the game inched toward full time, Paladini hit a 40-yard free kick that deflected off the City Stars’ wall. The deflection threw Cleveland goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap just off the ball’s path and allowed it to sneak in at the far post. It was the second straight game Paladini scored a late winner. On May 24, he scored in Austin on an 83rd-minute penalty kick.
Low, playing at left back, helped hold the City Stars to five shots, none on goal, and the RailHawks earned their fourth straight shutout and seventh of the season on Friday. Carolina has not allowed a goal in a club record 396 minutes, and Low has been on the field for 319 of them.
The first-place RailHawks (7-2-1, 22 points) return to action with three games in five days next week. They will face the Richmond Kickers on June 9 in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup then return to USL-1 play on June 11 against the Portland Timbers before travelling to Minnesota to meet the Thunder on June 14.
