There are only a few days remaining before the curtain closes on the larger-than-life, 3-dimensional art forms that comprise the Cary Visual Art 2008-09 Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition on the Cary Town Hall campus, 316 N. Academy St. in downtown Cary. The show, which closes on June 18, 2009, features 10 artists from North Carolina and Virginia and showcases an array of subject, media, size and placement.  Carved stone, welded steel, wood, and even a wind-up music box have been used by the artists to amuse and inspire viewers.

The Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition includes large works such as Carrboro artist Mike Roig’s Air Guitar, visible from Academy Street; Red Springs artist Adam Wall’s enigmatic Memory Ball under the trees near the Page-Walker Arts and History Center;  and Grimesland, NC artist Hanna Jubran’s monumental Earth, Water, Wind, Fire #2 at the corner of Academy Street and Ambassador Loop.

“Take a self-guided tour using our free illustrated brochure available inside Town Hall or just drop by anytime to experience this unique exhibition on your own,” said Public Art Coordinator Denise Dickens.  She added that while visitors can view the exhibit anytime, she recommends that guests touring the grounds during daylight.

The exhibition is co-sponsored by Cary Visual Art (CVA).  CVA began as a committee of the Cary Chamber of Commerce in 1996 and was incorporated as an autonomous nonprofit organization in 1997.  The organization has frequently collaborated with the Town of Cary on projects including helping support Arizona artist Barbara Grygutis’ Imaginary Garden in the Town’s new Walnut Street Park.  CVA inspires the community to take an active role in the commissioning and implementation process. Selection committees involve private citizens, property owners, local businesses, arts professionals, and municipal representatives.

The Town of Cary and CVA are currently preparing the next Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, which will run August 14, 2009, through June 25, 2010.
